The Holistic Authority Score measures topical coverage as a number between 0 and 100. Topical coverage needs a number because topical authority is currently judged by opinion, and opinion cannot be audited, compared across two months, or handed to a client as evidence that building topical authority to rank is working. The Holistic Authority Score has five components: tuple coverage worth 30 points, extraction integrity worth 20 points, network integrity worth 20 points, information gain density worth 15 points, and historical depth worth 15 points. What the Holistic Authority Score measures
The Holistic Authority Score measures how completely a website covers its topical map, expressed as a single integer between 0 and 100. The score takes five inputs: the tuple inventory of the topical map, a sample of the site’s headings, the internal link graph, a census of core section pages, and the publication record. Each input produces one weighted component, and the five components sum to the score.
The Holistic Authority Score exists to answer one question with evidence rather than judgment: is this website building topical authority to rank, and by how much has it moved since the last measurement.
Why topical coverage needs a number
Topical coverage without a number cannot be audited, because two practitioners looking at the same website will disagree about whether its coverage is adequate and neither can be proven wrong. Topical authority is described everywhere as “comprehensive coverage of a topic,” and comprehensiveness stated that way is a feeling, not a measurement.
Three specific failures follow from the missing number.
A site cannot detect regression. A website that published 40 pages in one quarter and 40 pages in the next has no way to know whether the second quarter added coverage or duplicated it. Duplicate coverage raises cost of retrieval, because the search engine must choose between two of your own documents to answer one query.
A site cannot prioritize. Without a tuple inventory and a coverage percentage against it, the next article is chosen by search volume, which is exactly the behaviour that produces a volume chaser rather than an authority.
A client cannot be shown progress. A consultancy that reports “coverage improved” is reporting an opinion. A consultancy that reports “the Holistic Authority Score moved from 46 to 61, driven by 82 newly covered root tuples” is reporting a fact.
The five components of the Holistic Authority Score
The Holistic Authority Score contains five components, each with a fixed weight.
Tuple coverage — 30 points
Tuple coverage measures the proportion of the topical map’s tuple inventory that the website actually renders as a heading, a table row, or a page. Every entity-attribute pair in the map is one tuple. A tuple counts as covered when the site contains a heading or row that states that pair and answers it in the following sentence.
Tuples are weighted by structural class, because covering a root attribute is not equivalent to covering a node attribute. Root tuples count three times, seed tuples count twice, node tuples count once.
Tuple coverage points = (achieved weighted tuples ÷ maximum weighted tuples) × 30
Extraction integrity — 20 points
Extraction integrity measures the proportion of headings whose first sentence is an extractable triple carrying an exact value. Sample a minimum of 50 headings across the network. A heading passes when the sentence directly beneath it states a subject, a precise predicate, and an object, with a number, date, or named quantity where the heading calls for one.
A heading fails when the first sentence is preamble, when it hedges, when the subject is a pronoun rather than the repeated entity name, or when it answers with a category instead of a value.
Extraction integrity points = (passing headings ÷ sampled headings) × 20
Network integrity — 20 points
Network integrity measures the structural health of the semantic content network across five checks worth four points each.
- Orphan pages. Four points at zero orphans, scaling to zero points at 10 percent of URLs orphaned.
- Click depth. Four points when every page is reachable within three clicks of the home page.
- Bridge presence. Four points when every outer section page carries a justification passage plus an anchor into the core section.
- Forward direction ratio. Four points when outer-to-core links outnumber core-to-outer links by three to one or better.
- N-gram consistency. Four points when no concept in the locked vocabulary appears under a rotating synonym anywhere in the network.
Information gain density — 15 points
Information gain density measures the proportion of core section pages carrying at least one element the index does not already contain. A qualifying element is an original number from practice, an original framework component, an original comparison, or an original observation that no competing document states.
A restated definition, a cited third-party statistic, and a paraphrased competitor argument each score zero.
Information gain density points = (core pages with a qualifying element ÷ total core pages) × 15
Historical depth — 15 points
Historical depth measures accumulated publication history and earned query breadth, split into two halves of 7.5 points.
The first half scores months of continuous publication at a stated cadence, capped at 24 months. The second half scores the count of queries the network ranks for against the target query count of the topical map.
Historical depth is the only component that cannot be bought, outsourced, or accelerated. It is the component that makes a new domain’s ceiling lower than an established domain’s ceiling on identical coverage, and stating that openly is more useful than pretending coverage alone is sufficient.
How to calculate the Holistic Authority Score
The Holistic Authority Score is calculated by hand in five steps. The worked calculation below runs against a topical map containing 412 tuples.
Step 1. Tuple coverage. The map contains 48 root tuples, 126 seed tuples, and 238 node tuples. Maximum weighted tuples equal (48 × 3) + (126 × 2) + (238 × 1), which is 634. The site covers 44 root tuples, 71 seed tuples, and 90 node tuples, giving achieved weighted tuples of (44 × 3) + (71 × 2) + (90 × 1), which is 364. The ratio is 0.574, and 0.574 × 30 returns 17.2 points.
Step 2. Extraction integrity. A sample of 60 headings returns 27 first sentences that state an extractable triple with an exact value. The ratio is 0.450, and 0.450 × 20 returns 9.0 points.
Step 3. Network integrity. The network carries 14 orphan pages and scores 1 of 4. Click depth scores 3 of 4. Bridge presence scores 1 of 4, because most outer pages link into the core through navigation rather than justification. Forward direction ratio scores 2 of 4. N-gram consistency scores 2 of 4, because “topical map” and “content map” both appear. The total is 9.0 points.
Step 4. Information gain density. The core section contains 34 pages, of which 6 carry a qualifying original element. The ratio is 0.176, and 0.176 × 15 returns 2.6 points.
Step 5. Historical depth. The site has published continuously for 19 months, giving (19 ÷ 24) × 7.5, which is 5.9 points. The network ranks for 1,240 queries against a map target of 5,000, giving (1,240 ÷ 5,000) × 7.5, which is 1.9 points. The total is 7.8 points.
The five components sum to 45.6, and the Holistic Authority Score is 46.
The calculation also produces the remediation order. Information gain density scored 2.6 of 15 and is the largest gap in proportional terms, so original elements in the core section are the first fix, ahead of publishing further node coverage.
The four Holistic Authority Score bands
The Holistic Authority Score falls into one of four bands.
Fragmented, 0 to 39. The network covers scattered attributes without a map. Coverage gaps are not measurable because no tuple inventory exists. Publishing more pages at this band raises cost of retrieval faster than it raises coverage.
Partial, 40 to 59. A map exists and root attributes are partly covered, but seed clusters are half-finished and information gain is thin. Half-covered clusters read to a search engine as incomplete coverage, which is why a Partial site frequently underperforms a smaller site that completed fewer clusters fully.
Contested, 60 to 79. Coverage is substantially complete and extraction integrity is high. The site ranks, competes, and loses individual queries to specific stronger documents rather than to general weakness. Gains at this band come from information gain and historical depth, not from more pages.
Authoritative, 80 to 100. The network covers its tuple inventory, every core page carries information gain, and historical depth is accumulated rather than claimed. A score above 80 is rare and cannot be reached in under 24 months, because historical depth is capped by time.
What the Holistic Authority Score does not measure
The Holistic Authority Score does not measure revenue, and a site can score 78 while converting nothing.
The Holistic Authority Score does not measure backlinks, brand mentions, or any off-site signal. Off-site signals independently influence both classical ranking and citation by generative retrieval systems, and a coverage score is silent on all of them.
The Holistic Authority Score does not measure whether a human reader enjoys the page. Extraction integrity rewards declarative, fact-dense sentences, and a document can maximize extraction integrity while being unpleasant to read.
The Holistic Authority Score is not a Google metric, has never been confirmed by any search engine, and does not predict rankings on its own. It measures the completeness and extractability of a semantic content network against its own topical map, which is the part of the outcome a practitioner controls.
BRIDGE
A Holistic Authority Score is a diagnosis, and a diagnosis without a treatment sequence changes nothing. The worked calculation above returned 46 and identified information gain density as the binding constraint, but identifying the constraint is a different task from rebuilding 28 core pages to remove it. That rebuild requires the tuple inventory that produced the score, the remediation order the components imply, and a publication sequence that completes each seed cluster before opening the next.

Holistic Authority Score compared to tool-based content scores
The Holistic Authority Score differs from tool-based content scores on three axes.
Absolute rather than competitor-relative. Tool-based content scores are typically computed against the terms present in the current top-ranking documents, so the score moves when competitors change their pages. The Holistic Authority Score is computed against your topical map, so it moves only when your network changes.
Disclosed rather than proprietary. The five components, their weights, and the arithmetic are published above and can be recomputed by hand from a spreadsheet and a crawl. A score that cannot be recomputed by the person being scored cannot be argued with.
Network-level rather than page-level. Tool-based content scores grade one document at a time. The Holistic Authority Score grades the semantic content network, which is the unit that carries topical authority.
How often the Holistic Authority Score should be recalculated
Recalculate quarterly, or after any publication run that adds 20 or more pages. Recalculating more frequently produces movement inside the noise of the heading sample.
Whether a new domain can score above 60
A new domain cannot score above 60 within 12 months. Historical depth caps at 7.5 of 15 points before 24 months of continuous publication, and the second 7.5 points require accumulated ranking queries that a new domain has not yet earned. A new domain’s realistic 12-month ceiling is approximately 57, achieved by maximizing the four controllable components.
