What domain authority is
Domain authority is a third-party prediction of how likely a domain is to rank, expressed on a proprietary scale from 1 to 100, computed principally from that domain’s backlink profile.
Domain authority is a vendor product rather than a search engine output. Moz publishes Domain Authority, Ahrefs publishes Domain Rating, and Semrush publishes Authority Score, and each is calculated by a different formula that the vendor owns. The three scores routinely disagree about the same domain.
Domain authority scales logarithmically. Moving from 20 to 30 is materially easier than moving from 70 to 80, which is why the number flatters new sites early and then appears to stall.
Whether a search engine uses anything equivalent is contested. Google has repeatedly stated publicly that it does not have a website authority score. The 2024 Content Warehouse documentation leak included an attribute named siteAuthority, and its role in ranking has not been publicly confirmed by Google. Both facts are true, and this article does not adjudicate between them, because the practical conclusion is the same either way: a vendor’s domain authority score is a third-party estimate, not a reading of a Google metric.

Domain authority is blind to coverage. A domain with a strong backlink profile returns a high score whether it has published 12 pages on a subject or 400. The score cannot detect that a subject is half-covered, because the score never reads the subject. A team optimizing domain authority alone will keep acquiring links to a property that has nothing to rank.
Topical authority is blind to off-site weakness. A property can cover a subject completely, structure every page for extraction, and still lose every competitive query to a weaker document on a stronger domain. Coverage sets what a property deserves to rank for, and off-site signals influence how much of that it collects.
The failures are complementary rather than opposed. Each metric is precisely blind to what the other reads, which means the pair is diagnostic even though neither is sufficient alone.

Reading both metrics together produces four states, and each state has one available repair.

Borrowed. The property ranks for queries its coverage does not deserve, carried by domain strength. Borrowed positions are the most fragile in search, because they hold only until a competitor covers the subject properly. Borrowed presents as good aggregate traffic with poor performance on specific, well-contested questions. The repair is coverage, and the property is unusually well positioned to benefit, because new coverage on a strong domain is evaluated quickly.
Compounding. Coverage is complete and off-site strength collects what the coverage deserves. The repair is defence: close remaining gaps, maintain publication cadence, and watch for competitors moving out of Borrowed.
Earned. The property covers its subject and ranks within its niche despite a weak off-site profile. Earned is the normal state of a well-built new property and it is frequently misread as failure, because the vendor score stays low while performance improves. The repair is off-site: the coverage already exists, so brand mentions and citations raise a ceiling rather than papering over an absence.
Invisible. Neither metric supports ranking. The repair is coverage first, not links first, because off-site work performed on thin coverage amplifies nothing. Link acquisition against an Invisible property is the most common way a budget is spent without producing a result.

Domain authority reads a backlink profile and returns a number that no editorial decision follows from. A domain authority of 41 does not indicate a subject, a gap, or an article.
Topical authority as commonly discussed is a judgment rather than a measurement. Two practitioners assessing the same property will disagree about whether its coverage is sufficient, and neither can be shown to be wrong, because no shared inventory of what complete coverage would contain exists.
Both metrics are therefore descriptive rather than instructive. They report a condition and leave the next action undefined, which is the specific failure that makes topical authority feel unmeasurable to teams who are actually building it correctly.

A website can build topical authority without backlinks, and it will rank in low-competition and mid-competition queries while doing so. Coverage is what makes a property eligible for a query, and eligibility does not require a referring domain.
Backlinks and brand mentions influence how much of the eligible set the property collects, particularly in contested commercial queries and in citation by generative retrieval systems. The accurate statement is that coverage without off-site signals produces a real but capped result, not that it produces nothing.
How long each metric takes to move
Domain authority moves within weeks at the low end of its scale and moves negligibly at the high end, because the scale is logarithmic. Topical authority moves across quarters and does not move at all in the first weeks of publication, because it depends on accumulated history as well as coverage.
The mismatch in timescales is why properties in the Earned state are frequently abandoned three months in. The vendor number is flat, and the vendor number is the one being watched.
